It is time. For too long we have existed in a perpetual state of exhaustion. We are overworked, undervalued and stagnated. Our experience, expertise, and passion should be recognized and respected. We should be fairly compensated for our work. How can we create a more equitable balance of power at our school so that we, the faculty & staff, have our voices heard? 

As faculty and staff at NYFA, we are coming together to secure a better future through collective bargaining. We are joining a growing movement of over one hundred thousand academic workers nationally who are organizing with the UAW, including faculty & staff on our New York campus at NYFA (ATS-UAW), who are negotiating for better pay, benefits, and working conditions through collective bargaining. 

With the formation of our union Association of Teachers & Staff Los Angeles-UAW, we will have the ability to bargain for similar improvements to our wages, benefits, working conditions, and job security including a competitive and transparent pay scale that reflects the expertise and experience of NYFA’s roster of teachers & staff, transparent class- offering practices and reliable schedules offered with reasonable notice, reinstatement of our 401k match, and more. Without a union:

  • NYFA unilaterally determines our salary, benefits, and working conditions, and can change them at any time without our consent.

With a union:

  • We elect a bargaining committee that gathers input from faculty & staff across campus.
  • Our bargaining committee negotiates a contract on equal footing with the NYFA administration.
  • Our contract can only be approved democratically, through a vote by our members.
  • Our contract determines our terms and conditions of employment and is binding and enforceable, usually through appeal to a neutral arbitrator. We gain a stronger political voice, working with tens of thousands of UAW members, in Los Angeles and across the country, to protect and expand funding for education and research.
